Genuine Unconscious Attention

Genuine Unconscious Attention

There were plenty of moments while I was making Lulu Cinnamon where I just didn’t know which way to go. You’d think years of tutorials, of learning production, of hours inside Ableton, would be enough. It wasn’t. A lot of things you only learn in the mud. A lot of others you only learn by losing. There were moments where it felt like it would never end. How do I record this? How do I even execute that?

When I talk about unlearning, I mean dropping certain ideas, beliefs, and techniques. The ones that put you in this “advanced” state. I mean becoming free again. Genuine unconscious attention. Just be. And creativity flows from that, endlessly.

Simplify to win. Chase what’s musical. That’s what I’ve learned, and it breaks so many limits in production and mixing. Technique doesn’t matter. Technical precision doesn’t matter. What matters is the ear, what it makes you feel. Anything really does go. That’s the trick. There’s no critic, no audience, no gallery. In that moment, there’s only your decision. It’s impossible to lose.

It’s very unlikely you’ll get it wrong in the moment you actually feel it, the moment you can say, “that’s it.” It doesn’t matter what the numbers say. It doesn’t matter the volume. If that’s it, you’ve nailed it.

It’s about getting as close as you possibly can to that feeling. So strip away whatever you need to strip away to find that answer, to decide from your purest musicality and your purest self.
